Arkansas Baptist churches plan Christmas events

ARKANSAS BAPTISTS across the Natural State are gearing up to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with all sorts of special services, cantatas and other events.

At Lawson Baptist Church in Lawson, “We hitch up the mules and go caroling to our elderly neighbors!” said Kaci Travis, media coordinator and church clerk. Lawson Baptist is located at 2231 Lawson Road in Lawson, which is about 12 miles from El Dorado.

Randy Cross, worship arts/assimilation minister at Trinity Baptist Church in Searcy, said the Trinity worship team will present “A Happy Holloway’s Christmas” Friday through Sunday, Dec. 8-10. The Dec. 8 performance is at 7 p.m., the Dec. 9 performance is 2 p.m. and the Dec. 10 performance is at 6 p.m. Trinity Baptist is located at 1601 E. Moore Ave. in Searcy.

First Baptist Church in Greenwood will host Saturday Sunday Night At the Park Dec. 9-10, according to Tom McCone, worship pastor. The event features an outdoor Christmas concert at Bell Park in the city, and will feature the church’s children’s student and adult choirs. Additionally, several choir members from First Baptist Church in Boonville are also participating. First Baptist also will host a community Christmas Eve Service, Dec. 24, at the local high school Performing Arts Center. First Baptist is located at 19 N. Adair St. in Greenwood.

Jerry Williams, minister of music at Calvary Baptist Church in Benton, said the church will present its Christmas special, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” at 6 p.m., Dec. 9, and during the 10:50 a.m. morning services Dec. 10. The church is located at 612 Valley View Road in Benton.

The sanctuary choirs at First Baptist Church in Forrest City will present “An Old English Christmas” at 6 p.m., Dec. 3, according to LaNan DeVazier of the church. Additionally, ladies of the church will be hosting a Christmas brunch Dec. 9 and the church will conduct a Christmas Eve service Dec. 24. First Baptist is located at 507 N. Rosser St. in Forrest City.

First Baptist Church in Little Rock will present seven performances of “The Tree” Thursday-Sunday, Dec. 7-10, according to Jonathan Curtis, First Baptist’s lead pastor.

“The Tree features a a 40-foot structure redesigned in 2015 with 28,000 channels of LED lighting, returns for its third consecutive year to much acclaim after a 14-year hiatus,” according to promotional materials about the event.

“Each year we are asked if we’re doing The Tree again. It continues to not only be special to the community, but has become our largest mission,” said Curtis. Jerry Wilson added that the performance includes “a live orchestra, environmental projection, drama, custom-made theatrical sets, 120 singers including students from Baptist Preparatory School, and dancers with New Creation Dance Company from Sherwood.”

South Main Baptist Church in Crossett has an annual Hanging of the Green worship service. "Many guests come and hear the gospel message through the story of Jesus’ birth, and the meaning behind the various Christmas decorations," said Lyle Hern, pastor.
