Cowboy churches

Should the Arkansas Baptist News promote cowboy churches? Cowboy church: What is the implication? What impression does that make on the world? Does it imply that they are an exclusive, clannish group?

What if sports figures, farmers, bankers, lawyers, doctors, the military and other professionals wanted churches which glorify their professions?

Christians should want to associate with people of like faith, not like profession.

Some people believe in “whatever it takes.” Do we deceive people into believing all is right with God when we entice them to come because of fun, food and entertainment? Crowds followed Jesus because of the miracles He did, but He didn’t commit Himself to them.

We should follow Him and encourage others to follow Him because of who He is and because of His sacrifice He made to save the world. How we cheapen Him and His sacrifice when we resort to drawing people to Him through worldly practices!

Deuteronomy 28 lists blessings on those who obey Him and curses on those who disobey Him. Verse 45a says, “Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed.” Verse 47 says, “Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things.” Our purpose for serving is all-important.

Dear Ms. Looney,
I am a member and regularly attend Mountain Top Cowboy Church and I feel the need to clear up some misconceptions you have of our church. First I would like to invite you to attend one Sunday because by your comments I feel you have never experienced Mountain Top Cowboy Church. I guess we could have been called Mountain Top Baptist Church, where people of like faith attend, that happen to wear cowboy hats, but we are not. We are called Mountain Top Cowboy Church but, what we are is a church where all is welcome. We have doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, officers, firemen, union workers, mothers, fathers, grandparents, young people, old people, ranch hands, rednecks, business owners, and yes a few “cowboys”. We are all also sinners that have found a church that God has called us to. A place where many have entered ignorant and empty but left enlightened and full of the Lord. I have watched many family and friends (including myself) that where living for the world have a complete life change and been saved, baptized, and are now living for the Lord.
Now as for bringing people in for entertainment and fun. Deceiving them into thinking all is right with God, well just attend a service on Sunday and I assure you, you will find out this is not the case. You may find our music entertaining and fun (I do but, I love to sing praises to the Lord) but, when our Pastor Bro. Brad Curtis gives the Lord’s message there is no misunderstanding as to what is right with God.
We do fellowship and have events together. Such as ranch rodeos, horse shows, trail rides, and cookouts. If you are not a “cowboy” there is something for you to do in all these events. Should we do “whatever it takes” to get people to come to the Lord? Yes mam we should. The saying you can bring a horse to water but, you can’t force him to drink applies here. We can get people in the doors, but then it’s all God that keeps them there and brings them back. So if that means getting lost souls to come out to our events then great because they are also going to receive a good helping of the Lord’s word there.
If you read Acts 2 42-47 it will give you a description of a living and growing church. Where the believers “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship to the breaking of bread and to prayer” they were serving on another and reaching out to those who needed to know the Lord and for that the Lord “added to their numbers daily those who were being saved.”
Let me again invite you to attend a service with us one Sunday morning. We are currently in the sale barn at Heber Springs, but only for a few more months because God has blessed us with a beautiful building for His Church! Service starts at 9:00 but, be there early or you won’t find a seat. We will welcome you with open arms, come as you are, and no cowboy hats and boots are not a requirement.
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 3:11
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them
