Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 3:07PM SHERWOOD – Doug Compton encouraged evangelists to see themselves as “slaves for the King.”
ComptonCompton, a Paragould evangelist, spoke at the vocational evangelists dinner Monday, Jan. 23, during the Arkansas Baptist State Convention Evangelism and Church Growth Conference.
“See yourself as slaves … slaves to the King,” said Compton. “So this lost generation can find Christ. (I believe) we are only one generation from God being taken out of everything.”
Quoting 2 Timothy 2:24-26, Compton said the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome, but gentle to everyone.
“I know, there’s that person (out there) you want to hurt a little bit,” said Compton, adding an evangelist focused on serving the Master should resist such temptations.
“You’ve got to be able to teach. You’ve got to be patient … it’s time we are patient with lost people, leading them to the knowledge of the truth,” he said.
“Verse 26 fires me up!” Compton exclaimed, explaining the verse indicates how so many people today are trapped in the devil’s snare.
“So many people are trapped,” he said. “The question is, Do I answer them the way I want to or the way my Master would have me to?”
Compton said he has been told that 65 percent of the current world population is under age 19, and of this group only 4 percent claim to be Christians.
“We are called to proclaim the truth. We have to be bolder than what we’re doing. We have to step up. Each one of you has a unique call to present the gospel,” he said.
“We have a society that’s trapped. It’s time we stepped up and lived it.”
Compton concluded by telling the evangelists as they go about their ministries to never forget whom they serve.
“Next week you’ll be in the trenches,” he said. “(Remember) ‘I’m a slave to the King. I’m a slave and I want to win someone to Christ.’”
